History
In 1983, the Journal of Clinical Oncology debuted to communicate current findings related to clinical cancer research.
Initially, JCO was published monthly. The first editor was Joseph R. Bertino, MD (1983-1987), Cancer Institute of
New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ. Dr. Bertino was followed by George Canellos, MD (1987 - 2001), Dana-Farber Cancer Institute,
Boston, MA, and Daniel G. Haller, MD, (2001 - present), University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA. During
the early 1990s, JCO published the first ASCO evidence-based clinical practice guideline. In 1996, JCO.org debuted as the online counterpart to
JCO. In 2000, JCO moved to a twice-monthly publication schedule. In 2000, the Art of Oncology series appeared
in JCO for the first time along with the Biology of Neoplasia series. In 2003, ASCO began to self-publish JCO.
In 2005, JCO began publishing three issues per month and began publishing the JCO Special Series.
